I am probably not the biggest streetball or And1 Mixtape fan in the world. However the signing of Corey Williams a.k.a. Homicide by Cibona Zagreb attracted my attention.
After having already used a combo of crazy guards this year with Larry Ayuso and Tre Kelley, the Croatian team did another guard signing this last week by adding Corey Williams. Williams who is a New York Streetball legend finished his season in Australia and jumped on the offer of Cibona as he told our friends at crobasket.com.
Some may appreciate his “nice” haircut, others would mention his “wise” words after the signing.
I’m a journeyman. My career is based on hard work, I had to take the hard road. I earned everything with hard-nose blue-color basketball.
I can bring good defense, I can create off the dribble, penetrate. I can bring leadership. Everybody knows I don’t shoot like Ray Allen, but I see there are lots of guys on this team who can shoot, so I’m gonna get them the ball. They play hard and with a lot of intensity.
But his first game in the Adriatic league was not crowned by success. Cibona lost in Belgrade against FMP Zeleznik and Williams had 12 points in the 18 minutes of his debut. However, he got rejected twice by the FMP big guys who were probably aware that Homicide is more known for driving to the basket than going up for a Balkan-like jump shot. At least, they may have watched also some tape before as there are lots of highlight reels available on the net.
