We’re down to the final eight in Eurobasket 2009 and so now might be a good time to, um, reassess those investments made at the beginning of the tournament – which is to say, start covering on some still-shaky (or straight-up *gone*) wagers made before the tourney tipped off…
Spain remains a better than odds-on favorite to take Eurobasket; Euroleague/Ball in Europe sponsor SportingBet.com now has Espana at 19/20. In hindsight, while reviewing the “highlights” of Spain’s first- and second-round games prior to Poland last night, that these is the best line this team has gotten thus far. Greece remains second-favorite at 11/2.
The BallinEurope-suggested dark horse, Croatia, has gotten even darker. the Checkerboards at 40/1, met only by Russia at a like 40/1. Serbia is a relative favorite next to these teams at 14/1, but they “only” have to great through Russia and probably Slovenia to get to the finals.
(Incidentally, aren’t these brackets a tad lopsided? I mean, the other half is filled out by Spain, Greece, France and Turkey; that’s the two prospective favorites plus the only undefeated team in the tournament and Turkey, who nearly duplicated the feat. This bit of bracket also has the three highest-scoring teams remaining. Talk about your groups of death…)
Best bet on the board for a combination of probability and payout? I’ve got two: Slovenia at 11/2 is pretty tough to resist, as they should push aside Croatia tomorrow night and are fully capable of handling the Russia/Serbia winner. As for the second, well, let’s just say the sweetest line out there tonight has got to be Sporting Bet’s 2/1 odds on France against Spain. You heard it here first.
