The rumor mill has it that Sergio Rodriguez will be coming to Real Madrid for the 2010-11 season on a three-year contract, but Rodriguez’ agent José Ortiz today went on Spanish radio to announce that reports of his client’s jump across the Atlantic have been slightly exaggerated.
Ortiz pointed out to listeners that Rodriguez’ current contract with the New York Knicks is valid through June 30th and so the Team Spain guard cannot sign any new deal until then. Ortiz also hinted that, though Real Madrid has in fact put forth an offer and “es un club muy importante,” the Knicks may also be interested in retaining Rodriguez. If so, the NBA team cannot make an extension offer until after completion of the championship series.
The signing would represent Real Madrid’s first new contract for the 2010-11 season.
In 27 games with the Knicks this season, Rodriguez averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists in just under 20 minutes per game. Including 39 games with the Portland Trail Blazers, Rodriguez averaged 6.6 ppg and 3.2 apg on the season.
