Union in San Antonio: Spurs reportedly buy out Aron Baynes contract, sign to multi-year deal

This just in from TalkBasket.net: According to the international hoops-centric website, the San Antonio Spurs have signed Union Olimpija’s Aron Baynes to a multi-year deal and will complete a $400,000 buyout to land the player’s rights. Baynes had worked out for NBA teams including the Sacramento Kings in 2009, but didn’t stick in the big league.

After flirting with Erazem Lorbek in the offseason, Spurs brass were no doubt impressed by Baynes’ EL regular-season display (during which he looked much like Lorbek, 2011-12 edition) in which all he did was lead the league in two-point attempts, two-pointers made, offensive rebounds, total rebounds and performance index rating.

For San Antonio fans who subscribe to the “seeing is believing” credo, here’s a couple of goodies for you…

    WTF is this shit????

    Gabe and mike spent the last weeks telling everyone here that no NBA team would ever sign any player that failed to make it to the Top 16 of Euroleague.

    They flooded this whole site with those messages and said that anyone that disagreed with that was “clearly insane”.

    Wow, Greg Popovich just shit all over Gabe and mike.

    BTW, Os Davis, Baynes did NOT lead the Euroelague first stage in player rating. Ioannis Bourousis was the league leader. See for yourself:

      @Popovich owned: Weird, because according to the Euroleague player page for Baynes, he was in fact no. 1 in all five categories listed in the piece, the reference i used:

            Okay. Whatever I am just claiming that I never said Bourousis could not make the NBA, just that he would be a third string center. I mean Aron Baynes, who by the way, grabbed more rebounds than Bourousis did, was just signed by the Spurs to be a third string center.

            Bourousis better than Howard?! ROTFLMA Howard wins DPOY and 1st team All-NBA while Bourousis can’t even get selected for those awards in Euroleague losing out to such high rate centers as Krstic, Batiste, Splitter, and Maric, lol Bourousis would have difficulty getting any playing time in the NBA, he would be an NBA scrub like Spanoulis and if he did see any constant playing time against the conditioned NBA athletes he would last two games before hurting his gimpy knee or getting some other injury.

    @Os. I think the difference in the stats is because your stats are actual stats and @Popovich owned is per 40 minutes. Per 40 min. can be deceiving because many players who play more minutes tend to be exposed as they play more minutes. It’s best to go with actual stats, but sometimes you can also see a player whose not playing so much, and project his potential if he played more using the per 40 minute stat.

      There is no discrepancy. Os Davis did not post the per game averages. He posted totals. Bourousis led in per game stats. Baynes led in totals. This is because Bourousis missed a game with a injured knee.

      If you are this easily confused just look at the player pages. It takes like 5 seconds to take the total PIR and divide it by number of games for each player. A 12 year old can figure this. Especially when the player page already figured it for you.

    PIR can be misleading at times. You have to use common sense. If I want a big rebounder, I would pick Baynes over Borou since Baynes is averaging almost a double double at 13.8ppg and 9.8rpg. Borou is averaging 8.2rpg this season, but is a career 5.4rpg.

    Also, you want to talk PIR. Borou is a career 10.7PIR. So there.

    @Zoran. Whatever. , bottom line is Borou has a career 10.7PIR, which you consider so important, and this figure is very ordinary. When you combine 7.5ppg and 5.4rpg career stats, the conclusion is clearly this: Borou is a journeyman center and an okay center in the Euroleague but not world class. Sorry those are clear.

      In Euroleague they are selected to all-Euroleague teams and in NBA they are not even all-stars, in fact in the NBA Splitter is a back-up. So in Euroleague Splitter had better numbers and more awards and acknowledgement than Bourousis and he is a back-up in the NBA which means if Bourousis could even make the NBA he would be a 3rd stringer.

    Scola averaged 5 rebounds in Euroleague and 8 in the NBA, since the NBA is a MUCH LESS PHYSICAL LEAGUE.

    Every one of the Euroleague bigs is averaging more rebounds in NBA than they did in Euroleague. 5.6 rebounds in Euroleague is equal to 8-10 per game in the NBA.

    Once again, if you really were an NBA fan you would know that, Since almost all real NBA fans know that fact through NBA draft research.

    5.6 rebounds in Euroleague for a long career is an absolutely HUGE number. The mere fact that you act like a HUGE rebounding average is bad is yet more proof that you are one of the dumbest people on the planet.

      I wouldn’t say absolutely huge when Baynes led Euroleague with 9.8 rpg. I mean even Shelden Williams, that NBA scrubs of all scrubs, averaged 7.6 rpg in Euroleague.

      But more to the point Bourousis’ stats at 8.2 and 5.6 are pretty weak.

      Scola in fact averaged 5.6 rebounds in Euroleague, same as Bourousis but the difference is he averaged 14.3 ppg almost double of Bourousis.

      So let’s look at their recent stats then. Pekovic’s last four years before he went to the NBA he averaged 15.4, 14.8, 13 and 16.4 ppg for an average of 14.9 ppg, Scola’s last four years in Euroleague he averaged 15.5, 14.8, 15.1 and 15.2 for an average of 15.15 ppg while Bourousis’ last four years he averaged 14, 9, 10.7 and 8.8 for an average of 10.625 ppg, almost 6 less than Pek and 5 less that Scola. No matter how you want to look at it Bourousis sucks!

      Even Splitter averaged 13, 14, 14, 10.7 his last four years, average 12.925, still more than Bourousis.

    BTW, you can’t always project numbers to go up in the NBA. It really depends on the talent level of a player. Case in point: your favorite mama’s boy, Spanoulis.         Now what European championship are we talking about where Bourousis destroyed Noah? Was it the one where France won silver and Greece was 6th place. So the one game they faced each other was in the quarter finals where France beat Greece by 8 and eliminated them from medal contention?

        It shows how much a loser Bourousis is that you continue to bring by games where he get his ass kicked, like when you say he absolutely destroyed Garnett yet his team lost by 30 points. If your team loses they are empty stats. Noah did not have to score when he had NBA teammates like Parker, Batum and De Colo to embarrass Greek’s team of Euroleague scrubs. Bourousis is a loser, any team he is on sucks, he would probably lose in the D-league as well.

      Rotation player on one of the best teams in the NBA.

    Chris Copeland spent YEARS in Europe and never could he even make the Euroleague level. Never was able to even get a Euroleague contract. Now he is a rotation player on the Knicks, with one of the best records in the NBA.

    Using Gabe’s “logic” and “arguments” then that means Euroleague is better than NBA.

    It also means that someone like Bourousis, that actually plays in Euroleague and not weak minor league like Copeland played at in Europe would be a star in NBA.

    You see, these are “arguments” and “logic” that Gabe uses when he says this INSANE and UNTRUE BULLSHIT here all the time like, “since Bourousis failed to make top 16 and since Baynes blah blah blah blah”.

    Gabe, you make me SICK.

    So we see the real level of the NBA, since Copeland was not good enough to make the Euroleague, yet is a rotation player on one of the best teams in the NBA. Euroleague > NBA PERIOD.

      So by rotation player you mean 12.5 mpg and 6.8 ppg? Copeland did not even get off the bench in 12 of the 38 games.

      There is no way you can prove that he tried out for Euroleague and didn’t make it and considering that almost everything you post is a lie or an exaggeration I would call that a lie. Just because a player is playing at a lower level does not mean he tried out and failed for higher level play or if it does…

      Every star in Euroleague could never even make the NBA level. Failed workouts and tryouts from several NBA teams. Played in MINOR league, namely Euroleague…….
