FIBA has slapped Union Olimpija with a €100,000 fine and has prohibited the club from signing any further players, due to non-payment of players Vlado Ilievski, Sašo Ožbolt and certain staff members. The penalty could even get worse, as further €100,000 fines could be assessed, FIBA warned, and at the extreme end the club could be banned from international competition.
Slovenian media had hinted at the possibility of such actions from FIBA about two weeks ago, but then as now, no comment was offered by the club or its director.
In recent days, Olimpija has signed Kevin Pinkney and Kenny Gregory, so presumably these contracts will still be valid for the 2010-11 season. The club has reported that Luka Bogdanovic, who had been looked at by the team, will instead sign with Chorale Roanne.
