The headline proclaims “Kobe to test a pair of ‘hats’ on Lebron” (Gotta be wordplay…), while word bubble has Kobe explaining his eschewing of the particular model he was apparently given for something better — perhaps a Nike-branded model…?

    Good news for Gabe. He said over and over here that he “hopes to God that Greece’s national team abandons the epic scrubs Ioannis Bourousis and Vassilis Spanoulis and gets them off the team, and builds around the NBA caliber players Kosta Koufos and Kostas Papanikolaou.

    So, Gabe will love this.

    The new head of the Greek national team gave an interview where he said he has reviewed all of the Greek players that the Greek Federation listed to him as being players they will consider (as in players he is allowed to invite for tryouts)……….

    He said that,

    1. The Greek national team will be built around it’s great European stars of Vassilis Spanoulis, Ioannis Bourousis, and Nikos Zisis…….

    2. The team also has a great veteran leader like Antonis Fotsis that is available to him.

    3. He will allow Loukas Mavrokefalidis into the team tryouts, if he wants to play.

    4. Vassilis Spanoulis is the best Euroleague player there is, and is one step above any other Euroleague player, and the team will be based and built around him.

    Nice……..plus the fact that this is an Italian League coach, that sees Bobby Brown playing all the time…………………

        We have the new Kevin Durant, we have the most talented big in the world in his age group, we have the current best point guard on the planet, we have the most skilled center in the world, we have the top European player of his generation (BETTER THAN RUBIO), and we have probably THE MOST ATHLETIC PLAYER IN EUROPE AND MAYBE EVEN IN THE WORLD.

    Kosta Koufos has been a pleasant surprise for the Nuggets. He doesn’t have great numbers but when he is on the floor, I heard this NBA statistician say he significantly helps the Nuggets.

    It’s a shame Niko and Team Greece are hard headed and are sticking to the old, proven, Greek formula that has gone down the tubes in recent years. The truth is there are other Greek players that could propel Greece to new heights.

    What Greece needs is open competition for the center spot. Give Koufos a chance. I mean it’s not like Greece has been dominating in recent years, actually quite the opposite. So why not have a fresh approach?

    I am Lithuanian but I can say is true Greece has unbelievable basketball program. For sure their youth players is at least second best in the world. I work in youth programs and Greece has by far biggest and best young players pool of talent.

    Thanasis Adetokunbo – he is like Andre Igoudala.

    Ioannis Adetokunbo – in Europe he is called “the new Kevin Durant”

    Lefetris Bochoridis – one of top European players of his class

    Ioannis Papapetrou – not a bad freshman in NCAA

    Paris Maragkos – not a bad freshman in NCAA

    Vasileios Charalampopoulos – considered top 1-5 player in Europe in his class

    Aleks Vezenkov – considered top 1-5 player in Euirope in his class. He plays for Bulgarians in youth levels so far because his dad is the coach of their senior program and heads things. But he is eligible to play for Greece and has grown up there. So any time he wants to play for Greece he can. Greece or Bulgaria? Seems easy choice.

    Atonis Koniaris – considered top 3-5 player in Europe in his class.

    Gergios Papagiannis – the talk in Europe is NBA teams have him #1 on their 2015 NBA draft boards.

    Even Greece has young players like these,

    Petros Melissaratos – he was one of the biggest stars of the under 18 championship in Europe

    Tasos Antonakis – he was one of the biggest stars of the under 20 championship in Europe

    Spyros Motsenigos – he was one of the biggest stars of the under 18 championship in Europe

    Giannoulis Larentzakis – he was one of the biggest stars of the under 18 championship in Europe – many people thought even he was the best player there of all

    Dimitrios Agravanis – he was one of the biggest stars of the under 18 championship in Europe

    There are players like Dimitrios Katsivelis, Vasileios Kavvadas and Andreas Kanonidis that are still college age players and already are able to play in rotations in top Greek league. This is very impressive as you have every year 5-10 NBA players and top NCAA stars getting cut from that league for poor play.

    Nikos Gikas – one of best young point guards in Europe

    Nikos Pappas – he is considered best European player of his generation, ahead of ones like Motiejunas, Rubio, etc.

    They did lose Mantzaris who is called “the new Prigioni” in Europe to acl injury. But still they have Kostas Sloukas and Kostas Papanikolaou which NBA teams are already making contract offers to.

    Koufos and Nick Calathes are 89 born so are just like 2 years removed from college age. Calathes already was offered contract by Mavs and he is one of best players in Eurocup and United League which is 2nd and 3rd best leagues in Europe. Some say he will be MVP in both leagues.

    Koufos starts in NBA.

    Vladimir Giankovits is still a very young player and already is very good chance he is best SF Greece has. He is very big rising star in Europe. From what I hear all big European clubs like Barca, Real Madrid, CSKA, Efes, Fener is trying to get him this summer. He is HUGE talent, really much better than Papanikolaou who was already drafted and already offered NBA contracts.

    Just look at how good Greek ROLE PLAYERS are,

    Nick Calathes, Kostas Kaimakoglou, Ian Vougioukas, Loukas Mavrokefalidis all of these players plays Eurocup and VTB league which is 2 and 3 best leagues in Europe. All of them are in top 10 leading candidates for MVP award in both leagues. These are ROLE PLAYERS like in 10-15 man type players in their program.

    Of course if you need stars you have Schortsanitis that gets double or triple teamed every touch he has in Euroleague, which is only Euroleague player of all time this happens to. As Lithuania fan I can say this was never done to Sabonis even.

    You have Bourousis that is best center of Europe and more kills than any NBA center. You have Pappas who was look to me like he was best player in Eurocup level this year and like I say is considered best Europe player of his generation, ahead of Rubio.

    You have some more role players like Fotsis, Zisis, Perperoglou, Pelekanos that have all been major rotation players of some of the biggest Euroleague clubs.

    And when you look to judge a national team program in current time you must see a great leader and superstar that can win any team by himself and take any game and that has big balls when the ball is heavy and then the great coach that can make a team reach its potential.

    So Greece has that new young Italian coach Trinchieri who is many people say the smartest and best coach of Europe these days. I have hear him be called “new Ivkovic”. At least from how his Cantu team plays, I know this is much much much stronger coach than Greece ever had. This is elite European coach which is something new for them.

    Then with Kill Bill. All basketball guys I know agree he is best player in Europe. The argument comes of is he best European player. Most says yes. I say most people in Europe will take him over Tony Parker who they talk about as MVP of NBA.

    Yes, Kill Bill is better than same guy that might be NBA MVP this year.

    And he has the biggest balls of all when the game is heavy. He is true killer of all Europe.

    Spanoulis/Calathes or Sloukas
    Pappas/Zisis or Vasileiaidis
    Giankovits/Papanikolaou or Perperoglou
    Printezis/Mavrokefalidis
    Schortsanitis/Bourousis/Koufos

    This such kind of team with coach like they have now? This is nightmare for whole international basketball. They will get gold medal in Slovenia and probably crush the hopes of Slovenes on their home floor. This is going to be a better era for them than 2003 to 2009.

    They have to be considers favorite along with US and Spain in 2014. Spanoulis, Sofo, Bourousis, Pappas, Giankovits, Mavrokefalidis, Vasileiadis, Zisis there is so much offensive fire power.

    There is not any team in this world that can defend this type of team with a very smart offense coach like Trinchieri. This is a team that can run up score against any opponent.

    Then with new Kevin Durant coming to them soon……………….

        So true, Gabe. But anyway the proof is in the pudding. Until Greece puts more emphasis on getting players that have performed at the HIGHEST level, the NBA, Greece could struggle. Many of these young players are unproven, and I have not heard reports from NBA scouts on young Greek players considered NBA prospects. I could be wrong, but I just haven’t heard any.

        Notice that the the top national teams in the world that have been doing well lately in competitions have a core or at the very least some players that have proven themselves in the NBA. Spain would be obvious, but Argentina, Russia, Lithuania, France also. Greece should make an effort to promote it’s players to become NBA players to get that crucial experience in the world’s top league, and then we’re talking.

    It’s true that Greece has the next Kevin Durant. NBA scouts are pouring into Athens to see the kid play. One NBA executive was reported to be astonished by what he saw.

    NBA scouts are drooling at this kid.

    He’s a 6-10 point guard with a good 3 point shot, a great handle, and he is a very good shot blocker. He’s also quite athletic.

      I have never even heard of Ioannis Adetokunbo. Calling him the next Durant is like calling somebody the next Jordan while in high school. Half the next “Jordans” never even made the NBA. Googling him it seems like the Celtics are looking at him. If he was the next Durant he would not be drafted by a team that does not have a lottery pick.

    Ainge was in Athens to have a personal meeting with Adetokunbo. The Celtics barely even scout in Europe, and they had a personal meeting.

    This guy is considered an enormously huge talent, and one of the biggest talents to ever come out of Europe. Who cares if you “never heard of him”? Who are you?

    This guy is a HUGE talent and NBA teams are all sending scouts to watch all his games. You make me laugh that you think this guy isn’t anything simply because YOU “never heard of him”.

    This guy even gets compared to Magic Johnson from some NBA personnel that have scouted him. I’ve seen a couple games of that kid. He’s an absolute FREAK.

    He’s definitely Kevin Durant like, only he’s a better ball handler and a better passer. He’s something like a cross between McGrady and Durant.

    The guy got a $5 million contract on his 18th birthday. Pretty sure players that “no one ever heard of” or that “have no chance to get drafted” don’t get $5 million contracts on their 18th birthdays.

      First off I never said anything about not getting drafted. I said not getting drafted in the first round. And even if some how he does he is no way being a lottery pick. Those draft boards on those “idiotic websites” discussed real lottery picks like Valanciunas, Vesely, Biyombo and Rubio. Adetokunbo is playing in a 2nd tier Greek division. At 18 Rubio was playing in the ACB and getting selected for this 3rd consecutive FIBA Europes Young Men’s player of the year award. Adetokunbo will be lucky just to make an NBA team, forget being a star.

      The fact is that all those players were NBA lottery picks and their names were mentioned as top draft picks and they were on draft boards as top picks. They also were playing in top European leagues like Euroleague or ACB before being drafted. This Adetocunbo is a nobody that no one in the US has even heard of that is playing in a 2nd tier Greek division. He might as well be playing in Angola.

    And Biyombo and Valanciunas didn’t play in Euroleague before being drafted. And how the hell is ACB a top league in Europe? It’s behind Euroleague, Eurocup, and United League.

    I hardly find the 4th best league in Europe to be a “top league”.

    Yeah, Biyombo was a freaking SCRUB in a POS ACB team. Big freakity whoop tee do. The guy was a freaking second PF on one of the worst Spanish teams.

    I looked this kid up on YouTube where they have mix tapes, clips from single games, and also entire games uploaded. He is 10 times a bigger prospect than guys like Biyombo or Valanciunas.

    There isn’t a single prospect in USA with his total package of skills, size, and physical tools. This kid will be a lottery pick absolutely 100% GUARANTEED.

    Rockets just signed Tim Ohlbrecht.

    The same Tim Ohlbrecth that averaged 7 points and 3 rebounds in Eurocup (the level below Euroleague) on one of the worst teams in the Eurocup.

    The same Tim Ohlbrecht that couldn’t get a contract in German League this year, despite trying to get one. But no one in Germany wanted him.

    Yeah, that’s how freaking “elite” the NBA is. It’s so elite that German League scrubs are getting contracts.

    Adetokunbo already #2 on draftexpress international board…….

    LMFAO they saw him doe ONE practice and he’s already #2 only behind Saric, because they have been kissing his ass for years now and don’t want to look bad since they really will show they don’t know a thing about overseas basketball – which they don’t

    As soon as this kid plays at Nike Hoops Summit he’s going to be #1 on the mock drafts.

    Greece also has some young players like

    Michael Bramos (already one of the best swingmen in Euroleague)

    Linos Chrysikopoulos (projected as an NBA draft pick)

    And I think even Dan Mavraides who plays now in Italian League has good potential. He was second best player in the Ivy League after Jeremy Lin, and he’s already playing better this year than last year.

    Made the rotation in a Eurocup team as a pro rookie, which even some NBA players failed to do in recent years. So I think even he has good potential also.

    Certainly you have to look at Bramos though, as he’s already maybe a top 10 small forward in Europe and Chrysikopoulos. There are a lot of people that think Chrysikopoulos is the best in Europe from 1992 class and he used to be ranked #1 there on the draft sites, before he missed the last 2 years with injuries.

    Now he is healthy again this year and was playing as a rotation player in Italian League, at just the age of a college sophomore. Then he got the move up to a bigger club when Greek club PAOK signed him a few weeks ago.

    So now he plays in the rotation of one of the biggest Greek clubs at just the age of a college sophomore. Even though his numbers are not great, as he’s probably there 10th man. Still, for his age this is SUPER RARE and IMPRESSIVE. I am sure he will be back to the tops or near it on the rankings lists soon after he is healthy again.

    And I would mention more focus on Lefteris Bochoridis. Because a lot of the basketball scouts and guys I talked to in Europe have him ranked #1 in European 1994 class. I saw him playing in the under 18 tournament and he was REALLY impressive player. Already at age 17 he looked like a pro level player.

    He might even be better than Adetokunbo is.

    And of course we must highlight of all them Georgios Papagiannis. if we are to talk Greek talents, then this is for sure biggest one of all. A couple managers from Spain told me this kid is simply biggest talent in center position they ever have seen in Europe.

    And we have to say his development so far can match to this. After all he is the youngest player ever to play in any fully professional league in the history of Europe. Even he was younger than Rubio was.

    I can compare him just as good example to Valanciunas at same age, since Valanciunas was top 5 NBA pick. Papagiannis is similar player but definitely better at same age.

    Papagiannis is just damn unbelievable kid at his age. He had something like 8 blocks at the world under 16 championship final. Just total freak of a prospect. Many says he is going to be first pick in 2015 NBA draft.

I am a USA fan, but I am a basketball fan first. And I love it with when internationals compete, persevere, and then succeed in the NBA.

    I would say some Greeks to watch for that people probably have not hard of yet –

    Nondas Papantoniou 1990 – big numbers in top Greek league with Peristeri

    Andreas Kanonidis 1991 – already nice numbers in top Greek league with Peristeri

    Giannoulis Larentzakis 1993 – dominated at under-18 Europe championship and already plays in the rotation in top Greek league with Ikaros.

    Nikos Pappas 1990 – Strange he isn’t a known name yet, but he isn’t. This guy is a scary good player. Potential is through the roof. He looks to have all the makings to be one of the best Euroleague players of the next 10 years.

    Greece always recently had guys that at one time were the best player in Europe. First Papaloukas, then Diamantidis, now Spanoulis. I would say Pappas can continue that trend. He should eventually be the top player in Europe at his peak.

    Maybe another one people don’t know about is Dimitrios Katsivelis 1991 – he plays in Olympiacos, but he isn’t known like Mantzaris, Sloukas, Papanikolaou are.

    A 6-6 point guard with a 6-8 wingspan and good athletic ability is not very common. He’s also a very good defender. Can play 3 positions. So he’s certainly a guy to keep an eye on.

    And maybe even the other young Olympiacos player that is unknown. Georgios Georgakis 1991 – Has not played much or shown much. But he’s said to be quite a good prospect. He made Olympiacos’ roster being just 21 so he must have something.

    He’s 6-10 and they have him rated rally high in potential.

    From guys I have seen even are ones people might not think of but have something.

    Ioannis Athinaiou 1988 – plays in Eurocup team Panionios. I like this player. Nice young combo guard. Quick, fast, smart, good ball handler, good passer. I see him as one of those Greeks that gets better every year of his career.

    And Vassilis Kavvadas 1991 is something. Plays also for Panionios. I have to say this is some kind of a bull in a china shop type of player. Very raw and young player. But damn is that guy stronger and more physical than any player I have seen in Europe except Schortsanitis.

    The guy would be at NCAA junior age, so he’s still young. But man, if this kid develops some skills with his power and his physical approach? This kid is nightmare potential for the defense in low post at power forward position.
    50/50 he never becomes much of a player 50/50 he becomes a nightmare for the opposition. Up to him to develop some game.

    But good god is he a freaking beast of a physical specimen.
