Podcast: Santa Claus comes to town, talks hoops (plus, reviewing possibly the worst Christmas special ever)

That’s right: On this week’s special Christmas edition of the heinnews/BallinEurope co-produced “Taking the Charge” podcast series, David Hein and yours truly host a guy who is certainly the biggest name we will ever welcome to the show, good ol’ Saint Nick himself, Santa Claus.

Santa assists us by doling out a half-dozen virtual gifts to various basketball luminaries playing here in Europe and in the NBA.

As part of our gift to you, this podcast is mercifully short in direct contrast to the typical Titanic length, but the “Taking the Charge” duo still manage to briefly touch on subjects including the big Unicaja Malaga-Panathinaikos trade (and possibly the previous such Euroleague-based acquisition – do we really have to go back to 2009?), the controversy of the German Bundesliga’s Giessen 46ers, and the reason why the Mayan Apocalypse didn’t happen, among others.

And for this week’s movie review, join BiE and (his victim) Hein for a discussion of quite possibly the worst holidays-themed piece in any visual medium, He-Man & She Ra: A Christmas Special. Seriously awesome in insane campitude, the entire masterpiece of so-good-it’s-bad 1980s animated cartoon series is embedded below; BiE dares you to watch it.

    Is the NBA still a magical level?

    You know, I’m not really impressed by it. It’s not magical, but now that I’m in it, I realize that it’s exceptional that the media is talking about it in the whole country. The littlest thing, on or off the court, immediately ends up on TV. The team does everything for you, so that you only have to worry about basketball. I’ve already said it, but it’s the first time that I go to practice without having to carry a bag or sneakers. I’m surprised each day about some of the customs.

    The funny thing is how the American fans express themselves. If you do a simple no look pass, then they think it’s the assist of the century! They have a different approach to sports than we do in Europe. If your shot rolls around the rim three times before it goes in, then they claim that you have a good, soft “shooter’s touch”. In France, we would just admit that we got lucky. They do these little things in practice to try to help the players.

    They’re all about the show. Every day, after the games, there are Top 5 and Top 10 play lists all over everywhere. They also do the same for all the other sports, which they also follow inside and out. What made me laugh recently during a timeout, in a game in Oklahoma, was that the fans were wearing costumes in the crowd. They don’t care about looking ridiculous, they just come to root for their team. That’s nice.

      Hmmm.. Funny how I got a different translation out of the answer to the same question about “It’s always magic in the NBA?”

      “You know, I’m picky about this. Not magic, but now that I’m here, I realize that this is still outstanding. This is mediated in the country. The slightest action on the field or off, it goes straight to the TV. You’re living in the clubs to make sure that you did not think that in basketball. I have already said, but this is the first time in my life I go to the room without bag, even your sneakers to match. I’m still surprised every day some customs.” then blah, blah blah (Basically what you wrote)

      But isn’t it funny how you conveniently left out how he says “I realize that this is still outstanding”” That’s weird how you admitted that? Must have been an honest mistake?

      You also left out the question:

      You could play the Euroleague this season with a big club, Real, Barca, you have no regrets?

      “No. My first choice was the NBA. Even if I could earn more money in a big European club or get more playing time early on, frankly, I’d ch … to end my career without trying the NBA. I am and I’m happy. Obviously, with more playing time, it would be even better.”

      Seems that he is saying that he prefers making less money and playing less time in the NBA as opposed to making and playing more on a top Euroleague club.

      Now why would anyone choose less money and less playing time unless….oh wait. I see why you left that part out. ooops.

    I am French. Locke’s translation is much more accurate and correct. Gabe’s is nonsense.

      Hmmm…That’s funny. Seems then google translator and all other translation sites are inaccurate and incorrect as well. Don’t believe me? Well than translate the interview yourself. Funny how google translator would make up all that stuff considering it’s a computer “Pierre”.

    Bing translator is more accurate than Google and comes up totally different. Basing this on an internet translator is beyond stupid. You are the dumbest person I have ever seen on the internet.

      Ummm..okay. On Bing translator is also comes up as “I’m hard for all that. Magic no, but now that I am, I realize that it is still outstanding.” Basically the same as Google and the same as what the French speakers said when you posted the same thing on insidehoops which is basically he does not like to use the term magic (or fine maybe he does not think it is “magic” but he still realizes it is outstanding.

      And the reply is the same with Bing and Google translator that when asked if he regrets not playing for a big Euroleague club he responds by saying even if he could get more money and playing time on a big European club his first choice is the NBA.

      No calling me the dumbest person you ever seen on the internet can change that he said that.
