BallinEurope took a little extra time with the Top 100 Teams in Europe list this week after a suggestion that certain ACB teams were getting the shaft of non-inclusion in the calculations – and so the pool has been widened accordingly.
In calculating the Top 100 for this week and heretofore, all teams in major domestic leagues with at least 10 wins will be included. With the addition of the new teams, some 165 sides are in the running for a ranking on this prestigious list and the very top is dominated by Spain: ACB sides bag five spots in the top 15 and twelve within the first 40.
Sharp-eyed observers may notice that point totals are actually down from last week, but please remember that these results are essentially graded on a curve (hey, lots of long division is involved, trust BiE on this one); final scores should be judged in relation to one another rather than week-to-week at this point in the 2010-11 season.
And once again in support of Britain’s fledgling national program in the runup to the 2012 Olympics, the no. 100 position is held by the current alpha dogs of British Basketball League. (Sorry, KTP Basket Kotka fans…)
1. (2) FC Barcelona (ESP), 496.88 points – Surely to no one’s surprise, last season’s Euroleague champions are fast becoming the consensus crème de la crème on the Continent. One Euroleague Top 16 win and a couple more ACB victories put Barça officially on top … for now.
2. (1) Montepaschi Siena (ITA), 483.97
3. (5) Real Madrid (ESP) 482.65
4. (4) Panathinaikos (GRE), 474.88
5. (3) Olympiacos (GRE), 466.78 – Could we be headed for an all-Spain Euroleague final after all? Olympiacos was decisively handled by the Blaugrana last week, while Real Madrid destroyed Partizan Belgrade.
6. (6) Fenerbahçe Ülker (TUR), 459.53
7. (7) Union Olimpija (SLO), 447.12
8 (tie). (9) Caja Laboral Baskonia (ESP), 437.39
8 (tie). (10) Power Electronics Valencia (ESP), 437.39
10. (8) Maccabi Tel Aviv (ISR), 426.58 – Call it the BiE curse. Just days after proclaiming these guys no. 1 in the power rankings in spite of the numbers, Maccabi looked outmatched and outclassed against Barcelona. This ranking may seem low, but BiE sure thinks it’s fair right now.
11. (11) Partizan Belgrade (SER), 418.67
12. (15) Efes Pilsen (TUR), 414.53
13. (14) Zalgiris Kaunas (LTU), 412.68

17. (18) Lottomatica Roma (ITA), 375.92
18. (19) CSKA Moscow (RUS), 364.69
19. (17) BC Khimki Moscow region (RUS), 361.79
20. (20) Cholet Basket (FRA), 343.98
21. (21) Brose Baskets Bamberg (GER), 336.83
22. (22) Asseco Prokom (POL), 333.70
23. (23) Unics Kazan (RUS), 297.33
24. (24) Galatsaray Café Crown (TUR), 275.52
25. (25) Spirou Charleroi (BEL), 245.80
26. (n/a) Valladolid (ESP), 235.58
27. (n/a) Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (ESP), 223.08 – Naturally, the top new entries in the Top 100 are all ACB squads; one can only wonder if a Spanish side can crack the top 25 before season’s end…
28. (26) Cibona Zagreb (CRO), 212.86
29. (32) Tartu Rock (EST), 211.00
30. (27) Gran Canaria 2014 (ESP), 210.96

39. (39) Asefa Estudiantes (ESP), 201.29
40. (36) KK Krka (SLO), 195.89
41. (37) Buducnost (MNT), 195.38 – Geez, has anyone noticed the Adriatic League standings lately? In what is currently a model of parity, *five* teams are tied for first place at 11-7: Union Olimpija (BiE ranking no. 7), Partizan (no. 11), Krka (no. 40), Buducnost (no. 41), and Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje (no. 57). Plus, Cedevita (no. 38) is just one game down on the table at 10-8. While you gotta figure the final will come down to the Euroleague teams, BiE certainly wouldn’t feel confident enough to bet on it…
42. (33) Banvit BK (TUR), 194.29
43. (43) Pepsi Caserta (ITA), 194.07
44. (42) Norrkoping Dolphins (SWE), 193.10
45 (tie). (38) CEZ Nymburk (CZE), 191.69

49. (44) Siauliai (LTU), 186.20
50. (40) Budivelnik (UKR), 184.14
51. (49) Beşiktaş Cola Turka (TUR), 176.56 – The Eagles are now 3-0 without Allen Iverson after topping Türk Telecom on Sunday; if you’re wondering whether Bill Simmons’ “Ewing Theory” might be in play here, those three victories have come against teams with a combined 15-33 record in the TBL, whereas Mr. Answer’s last two games were two-point losses against top 25 teams Galatasaray and Efes Pilsen.
52. (50) Pinar Karsiyaka (TUR), 176.47
53. (46) PAOK BC (GRE), 175.04
54. (48) Alba Berlin (GER), 171.41
55. (52) Panellinios BC (GRE), 165.96
56. (51) Rudupis (LTU), 164.29
57. (55) KK Zagreb Croatia Osiguranje (CRO), 163.67
58. (54) Le Mans (FRA), 156.56

73. (69) Khimik Yuzhny (UKR), 135.76
74. (63) KK Siroki TT Kabeli (BIH), 134.29
75. (67) Spartak St. Petersburg (RUS), 133.41
76. (108) Perlas (LTU), 132.57
77. (70) BC Lokomotiv Kuban (RUS), 132.53
78. (65) Deutsche Bank Skyliners (GER), 131.49 – This Bundesliga team suffered the biggest drop in the BiE rankings this week with an egregious 13-point slide mainly due to their bouncing from Eurochallenge. And despite an 11-0 home record in Beko BBL play, they’re still four games behind the Brose Baskets Bamberg. This just may not be the Skyliners’ year…
79. (111) Liepaja Lauvas (LAT), 129.96

92. (76) Telekom Baskets Bonn (GER), 110.12
93. (112) Valmiera (LAT), 106.62 – Definitely a beneficiary of sheer number of games played, Latvia’s fourth best team (by the numbers) surely won’t be seen here next week.
94. (84) Krasnye Krylia (RUS), 106.17
95. (n/a) Kryvbasbasket (UKR), 105.45
96. (87) Barak Netanya (ISR), 104.29

98. (n/a) Pyrinto (FIN), 101.88
99. (88) Szolnoki Olaj (HUN), 100.81 – Who says there’s no hope for Hungarian men’s professional basketball? Oh, right. BiE does.
100. (100) Mersey Tigers (GBR), n/a
